The Aberdeen charity Charlie House, which provides support for babies, children and young people with complex disabilities and life-limiting conditions, has secured planning permission for a support centre in the city.

The centre will provide family accommodation in the grounds of Woodend Hospital and will feature eight bedrooms, indoor activity rooms, outdoor play areas and sensory gardens as well as adaptable meeting and office spaces for the charity's team and medical staff.

The construction of this centre is the end result of a fundraiser campaign that was launched in November 2018 with a target of £8 million. Charlie House has raised £2.4 million so far and can now apply for addtional grant funding following the planning permission.

The building is a great progress to help families in Aberdeen as they won't have to travel over 100 miles to Kinross to access emergency short breaks and palliative or end-of-life care. Professor Nick Fluck, Medicak Director at NHS Grampian talks about the necessity of this centre: "there are currently around 1,800 children and young people in the North-East of Scotland who could benefit from the specialist support this facility offer them close to home".
